Postgraduate Programme

A postgraduate degree course at Nottingham University Business School aimed at producing the next generation of financial business leaders has attracted a prestigious endorsement of its quality.

The Chartered Banker Institute has confirmed its accreditation of Nottingham’s MSc Banking and Finance programme, making it the only MSc programme of its kind in Europe to be accredited by the CBI.

Professor James Devlin, Associate Dean and Director of the Centre for Risk, Banking and Financial Services said: “The formalisation of our relationship with the Chartered Banker Institute via full accreditation of our MSc Programme is an exciting development and one which endorses the School’s excellence and heritage in the areas of banking, risk and financial services.

“We look forward to working with the CBI to continue to produce world leading research that has an impact, excellent teaching and learning experiences and opportunities for leading academics and practitioners to discuss important issues. In particular, we look forward to supporting the CBI in its quest to increase levels of professionalism in banking and improving banking standards more generally.”

Chartered Banker status is the gold standard for professionals working in the banking sector. Holders of the title are recognised as highly qualified, professional bankers with a detailed knowledge of the modern banking sector and its ethical and professional requirements.

It requires individuals aiming to achieve accreditation to demonstrate knowledge in professional ethics and regulation; contemporary issues in banking; credit and lending; and risk management.

Mark Roberts, Head of Learning Partnerships at the Institute, said: “We are delighted to be working with Nottingham University Business School as banking and financial services research and teaching is a major focus of the business school.

The school also hosts the Centre for Risk, Banking and Financial Services, itself a recognised centre of excellence for research related to financial services consumers, markets and institutions.

“We feel the MSc is an excellent programme that will prepare its graduates for work in the sector or further academic study and are pleased to recognise the quality of the programme with the recognition afforded by Chartered status.”

The MSc in Banking and Finance is a relatively new addition to Nottingham University Business School’s portfolio of programmes, having been launched in September 2012 it is already proving popular amongst ambitious postgraduate students demanding academic rigour and industry relevance and who are keen to take the next step in their banking career.

The programme offers access to leading expertise in sustainability, risk management and business ethics, which continue to be vital to public, government and industry concerns about the banking sector. The course is taught by an experienced finance, economics, risk and specialist banking staff, who are also members of the Centre for Risk, Banking and Financial Services.

It has topicality embedded at the heart of its syllabus. The global financial crisis has shown that the real economy is directly impacted by banks’ ability in supplying funds to both firms and individuals and that regulation is crucial to ensure stability in financial services, all issues which are considered on the course.

Dr Richard Simper, Programme Director of the MSc Banking and Finance said: “We are delighted to be the only MSc Banking and Finance degree to attain full accreditation which is a clear indication of not only our research excellence, which allows our students to flourish academically, but also our dedication to industry relevance.

Our current students have already benefited from banking experts coming on campus here at Nottingham to lecture on crucial topics such as credit and lending.”
