MA Program in Peace Studies

Announcement from the European Peace University :

We wish to invite you to join a select group of about 20 students from around the world in an intensive course in Peace and Conflict Studies at the European Peace University Private University (EPU) in Stadtschlaining, Austria. The EPU is accredited by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Science and Research and the Austrian Accreditation Council.



Stadtschlaining is a beautiful, small and quiet medieval town with a ca.  800-year old castle hosting a peace museum. It is situated in the foothills of the Alps, between Vienna and Graz and surrounded by hiking trails, with a hot spring and spa nearby. Classrooms and 44 single rooms with private bath are located in a new building, Haus International. Next to the castle there is a famous peace library with 30,000 books and many films, most of them in English.



All the courses are taught in English, by experts in their field from around the world.



Orientation Week

1st trimester (Fall):

       Module 1: Introduction to Peace and Conflict Studies

       Module 2: Global and Regional Conflicts

       Module 3: Social Science Methodology


2nd trimester (Spring):

       Module 4: Peace through International Law and International Cooperation

       Module 5: State and Peace

       Module 6: Socio-Economic and Ecological Dimensions of Peace

       Module 10: Research Project (Part 1)

3rd trimester (Summer):

       Module 7: Peace through Mechanisms of Conflict Resolution and Non-Violence

       Module 8: Peace Potentials of Cultures and Religions

       Module 9: Peace Education and Non-Violent Communication

       Module 10: Research Project (Part 2)

Simulation Game

The 4th trimester is an internship trimester, the 5th trimester is dedicated to writing the MA Thesis.


Participation is possible in either the complete MA program, or in the Certificate Program, or in individual modules.



Students from any academic discipline interested in peace and conflict transformation.



A first university degree (Bachelor Degree or international equivalent), proof of excellent knowledge of English (TOEFL test) and preferably some professional experience in a related field.


For participation in individual modules no university degree is required.



Those who successfully complete the entire program (including MA Thesis and Defence) obtain an MA Degree in Peace and Conflict Studies.

Those who successfully complete one trimester obtain a Certificate Degree in Peace and Conflict Studies.

Those who complete individual modules obtain a Certificate of Attendance.



The academic workload done at EPU is measured in ECTS credit points according to the Bologna System. This system facilitates acknowledgment of academic work and degrees within the European Higher Education Area.  


The MA Degree in Peace and Conflict Studies counts for 120 ECTS. It entitles the holder to continue with a PhD at any given university, provided that the university accepts the candidate. For further information on allocation of ECTS to individual modules please see our website .



MA Program:

€ 2 500 tuition per trimester (for 3 trimesters) + € 1 400 accommodation* per trimester +

€ 800 graduation fee (non-recurring).

Certificate Program:

€ 2 500 tuition per trimester + € 1 400 accommodation* per trimester.

Individual Module:

€ 835 tuition per module + € 465 accommodation per module.


*Accommodation in single rooms with private bath, W-LAN access, kitchen etc. in the student hotel Haus International ( No meals included.
